Do I need a license to be an HVAC technician here?
It depends on the state. Ohio does not issue a state license to individual HVAC technicians. The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) licenses HVAC contracting companies for commercial work, and local building departments regulate residential work. Employers will usually want EPA Section 608 certification, which federal law requires for anyone who handles refrigerant. In Kentucky: Yes. Kentucky licenses HVAC journeyman mechanics through the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. A journeyman license generally needs two years of HVAC work under a licensed master contractor plus a passing exam, and apprentices register with the state while they log hours. Anyone who handles refrigerant also needs federal EPA Section 608 certification.
